Some words, called onomatopoeia, originated as an imitation of natural sounds—in fact, some linguists have developed a theory (sometimes known as the :bow-wow theory") that this is how all spoken language began. There are onomatopoeia in every language.
The Scripps National Spelling hosts three special sections of its Web site.
1. Teacher Log-in (also known as School Log-in):
User names and passwords were provided to the educators who officially enrolled their schools in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee program.
2. Sponsor Log-in:
User names and passwords were provided to key contacts for the 287 organizations that sponsored local spelling bee programs in 2009.
3. Champion Log-in:
User names and passwords were provided to the 293 spellers who will participate in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
