Get To Know The Competition

  1. This year we'll welcome 281 spellers from the 50 U.S. states, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe; also, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan and South Korea.
  2. Bee Week 2014 marks the first visit to the nation’s capital for 90 spellers.
  3. Speller 218 Hussain Godhrawala, of Barnwell, South Carolina, is the youngest speller in the competition at age 8.
  4. The spellers range in age from 8 to 15 years old, but more than 86% are between the ages of 12 and 14.
  1. Two spellers, speller 90, Vanya Shivashankar, and speller 188, Ashwin Veeramani, have siblings who have previously won the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
  2. 138 spellers speak more than one language.
  3. This year's group of competitors is 51% girls and 49% boys.
  4. Among this year's field, math is most frequently cited as a favorite subject.
  5. Five spellers said the person they would most like to meet is Dr. Jacques Bailly, the official pronouncer of the Bee. During Bee Week, they'll get their chance.
  6. The spellers' favorite words include bibliophile, effervescent, gestalt, kerfuffle, schottische and snickersnee.
